OTRANTO

ADRIATIC COAST

Otranto was formerly the capital of the Terra d'Otranto (the area of Salento) and was one of the most important cities used to defend the region. The Aragonese Castle of Otranto illustrates the importance of the city. It was built in the 15th century and was surrounded by a deep moat with three cylindrical towers. The old town of Otranto is located inside the castle’s walls and turrets and the high city wall give the old town a form similar to that of a ship. Today, concerts and exhibitions are held at the foot of the castle.

Unfortunately, the city was continually attacked from the East and fell victim to numerous invasions, the most memorable of which was that of the Turks in 1480 which culminated in the massacre of 800 martyrs whose skulls are still displayed in the cathedral today. The citizens of Otranto were massacared and the remaining 800 were given the opportunity to save themselves if they repudiated their belief in Christianity, which they refused, and therefore were beheaded. The story of this, and other invasions, is preserved in the Cathedral in Otranto, along with the enormous floor mosaic "Tree of Life" which recounts in vibrant colour various biblical scenes, for example Adam and Eve in Heaven and the construction of Noah's Ark.

The most important history of Otranto remains the history of the 800 martyrs. From August 13 to August 15 of every year the city is entirely devoted to the commemoration of the slaughter of Otranto. The mayor of the town, archbishop, and civil authorities assist in following a centuries old tradtion of honoring the martyrs through public rituals and processions. The small walled town swells with people from throughout Salento and the world, anxious to witness the historical display. Nowadays, concerts, street fairs and fireworks over the Adriatic Sea add to the celebratory display of pride in Otranto’s historical martyrs.

There is an open air market every Wednesday from 7:30 am and 12:30 pm in the public gardens of Otranto. Flowers, plants, local meats and cheeses, fruits and vegatables can all be purchased here, as well as local ceramics, clothing and household items all at low prices.

Porto Badisco is a public beach just a few kilometers from Otranto. Although the beach is open to the public it is typically uncrowded and free of tourists. It’s a bit difficult to get to and is not the typical smooth sand beach. It is comprised of large rocks, some small patches of sand and small rocks as well.
